Edward Ayers, Outstanding Doctoral and Research University Professor, teaches history and is dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Ayers, an expert on Southern history, has written several books, including The Promise of the New South: Life After Reconstruction, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in 1992. Ayers received the James Harvey Robinson Prize from the American Historical Association and the E-Lincoln Prize for Best Digital Project for his digital archive, the "Valley of the South Project." The project presents written records from residents of two counties—one on each side of the Mason-Dixon line—during the U.S. Civil War era. Ayers, whose honors include the Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia, earned an undergraduate degree in American Studies from the University of Tennessee and a master's degree and Ph.D. from Yale University.
